GERMAN PRE-WWI BAYONETS

German 1860 Prussian Grenzjager Border Guard Bayonet/Short Sword (No reference) bayonet7-74.jpg (72587 bytes) (closeup) (closeup) (closeup) (closeup) Rarity: R3+
Made by Gebr. Weyersberg, Solingen and dated 1861 for Prussia.  Has brass handle with wood grips held by three brass pins with one arm of the crossguard slightly bent.  German proof marked and dated on the crossguard and spine of the blade.  Very nice fullered blade with light staining and sharpening.  No leather scabbard.  Only 5,000 were made.  Very rare.

German 1865/71 Faschinenmesser Sawback Bayonet (Ref3,ABC876,page249) bayonet5-04.jpg (84055 bytes) (closeup) (closeup) (closeup) (closeup) (closeup) (closeup) Rarity: R4
This is a model 1865 Faschinenmesser sawback that has been modified to an 1871 model by bushing the muzzle ring to 17.5mm.  Crossguard is marked 1868 on the bottom of the crossguard.  The blade is made by Simson & Co and is dated 1905 for Prussia which is the last year for these modifications.  The handle looks to be made of German alloy which was brass plated (due to the shortage of wartime materials; especially brass).  Handle shows wear with about 70% of the brass finish removed.  Nice massive sawback blade with some pitting, sharpening and has been cleaned and polished.  No scabbard.  Very rare bayonet.

German 1871 Faschinenmesser Sawback Bayonet (like Ref1,No.4,page77, Ref3,ABC876,page249) Rarity: R3+
Made by E. F. Hörster and dated 1891 for Prussia.  Very nice brass handle.  Crossguard marked 3.P.E.3.142 and bottom of blade spine is marked (P 2).  Very nice sawback blade with some staining and peppering with light sharpening and slightly rounded tip.  No scabbard.  Scarce maker.

Made by Luneschloss and dated 1891 for Prussia.  Very nice brass handle.  Crossguard marked E.B.13.132.  Very nice sawback blade with some staining and peppering with no sharpening.  No scabbard.

German 1871/84 Bayonet (Ref1,No.3,page79, Ref3,ABC245/256,page178) Rarity: R2+
Made by Simson and dated 1888 for Bavaria (matching).  Nice handle with wood grips held by two rivets with some patina overall and pitting on right side.  Crossguard and scabbard throat have matching regimental markings B.7.R.14.199.  Blade has some staining, sharpening and dings along the blade edge.  Nice leather scabbard with dark fittings with pitting on front side.  Bavarian sets are rare and very hard to find matching sets.

Made by Haenel and dated 1888 for Bavaria.  Nice handle with wood grips held by two rivets with some patina overall.  Crossguard regimentally marked B.7.R.R.12.206.  Blade has some staining and sharpening.  Very nice leather scabbard with no regimental marking.  Bavarian sets are rare.

German 1871/98 Bayonet (Ref1,No.2,page85) Rarity: R3
This bayonet used a butcher or quillback-style hilt and the blade from a 1871 Artillery quillback bayonet and were modified around 1911.  Made by Clauberg and dated 1868.  Nice wood grips and patina on the handle.  Crossguard is regimentally marked R.J.R.233 on one side with 5.K.33 on the other side.  Dark staining on the quillback blade with light pitting.  No scabbard.  Very rare to find these bayonets regimentally marked.  Needs a really good cleaning.

German 1884/98 - 1st Pattern Bayonet Rarity: R2
Made by WKC and dated 1887.  Very nice wood handle that had the muzzle ring removed from the original 1871/84 model.  Very nice short fullered blade with some staining and light sharpening.  Crossguard is marked 17.R.9.34.  Very nice leather scabbard with peppering on the fittings.  The top fitting is marked 99.R.3.209.

Made by WKC and dated 1887.  Very nice wood handle that had the muzzle ring removed from the original 1871/84 model.  Very nice short fullered blade with some staining and light sharpening.  Crossguard is marked ?7.R.E.1.84.  Very nice leather scabbard that is missing top throat.  The top fitting is marked 60.R.2.194.

GERMAN WWI (Imperial) BAYONETS

German 1884/98 Bayonet (Ref1,No.1,page86, Ref3,ABC463/464,page309) Rarity: R1+
Made by Richard Herder and dated 1918 for Prussia.  Very nice wood grips with much of the original finish remaining on the handle.  Excellent blade with some blemishes but no sharpening.  Metal scabbard with about 75% blued finish remaining and is missing its frog stud which has been ground flush to the scabbard.  Very unsual matching numbers P.Z.6.8. (possibly for customs, police or railway troops).  Very rare matching numbered set in very nice condition.

Very nice early pattern 1 piece grips with some patina on the handle.  Made by Erfurt and dated 1900 for Prussia.  Crossguard marked E/R.J.R.202 (Reichswehr period marking).  Very nice blade with staining and no sharpening.  Very nice metal scabbard with about 40% black and OD paint remaining.  Rare Reichswehr period marking.

new-sign.gif (938 bytes) This is a standard German 1898 Quillback sawback model bayonet with its original German markings and with Czechoslovakian markings on the pommel.  Made by Alex Coppel and dated W06 for Prussia and regimentally marked 9.R.7.5.  The grips were replaced with ones with 7 short diagonal lines held by 2 spanner nuts and Czech markings or serial numbers were added on the pommel (S Czech lion).  The set has matching serial numbers on the pommel end and frog stud (7753).  Excellent sawback blade with no sharpening and original packing grease.  Excellent leather scabbard with steel fittings.

German 1898/05 (Butcher) 1st and 2nd Pattern Bayonet (Ref1,No.1,page86, Ref3,ABC463/464,page309) Rarity: R2
new-sign.gif (938 bytes) 1st pattern transitional pattern model with high ears and flashguard.  Made by Erfurt and dated 1915 for Prussia.  Nice wood grips with patina on the handle with some wood chips on either side of handle spine.  Excellent blade with some light cleaning and no sharpening.  No scabbard.  Rare early aA transitional model.

new-sign.gif (938 bytes) 1st pattern converted to 2nd pattern model with low ears and flashguard.  Made by Simson and dated 1911 for Prussia.  Nice wood grips with patina on the handle and crossguard.  Nice blade with some light cleaning and medium sharpening.  Metal scabbard with some dings and patina.  Rare early aA model converted to nA model after 1915.

Ersatz 1916 Bayonet (Carter's No.3-5, Ref3,ABC393,page265).

#5 model with unfullered blade model with oil hole on side of handle and is missing the press stud and release.  The crossguard and muzzle ring are 2 separate pieces of metal welded together.  Metal handle has light pitting and no finish remaining.  Inspection marked on top spine of blade.  Unfullered blade has no sharpening.  Black painted metal scabbard.

#28 model cleaning hole on top of handle with no reinforcement around press release catch with fullered blade.  Some light pitting and staining overall.  Metal scabbard made by FAG.

Ersatz Converted US/British/German Socket Bayonet w/Muzzle Ring Removed (Carter's No.68-69, Ref3,ABC690,page135).

Rarity: R3+
Similar to the #69 model but made by using ersatz handle with two piece crossguard (Carter's #3) with the muzzle ring removed with about 95% black paint remaining.  Socket blade looks to be from a Belgian 1841 or 1867 socket bayonet.  Little green paint finish left on the metal tube scabbard.  Brown unmarked leather frog.

Similar to the #69 model but made by using ersatz handle (Carter's #19) which is a rare model with single crossguard and no muzzle ring and socket blade from a foreign bayonet.  Handle has about 85% green paint remaining.  Nice socket blade.  Tubular steel scabbard with brass frog stud.  Very rare model.

GERMAN POST WWI (Reichswehr) BAYONETS

German 1898/05 (Butcher) Reichswehr Bayonet (Ref1,No.2,page99, Ref3,ABC464,page309) Rarity: R3

Late WWI / Reichswehr Commercial bayonet:

Reichswehr, 84/98 style model with no flashguard, with no maker or inspection markings but is marked with a 'H' on the spine of the blade.  Very nice wood grips with about 90% blued finish remaining on handle.  Crossguard marked '551'.  Inside of release catch is marked '3024'.  Very nice narrow, blued blade with over 90% blued finish remaining.  Rare Reichswehr bayonet.  For many years collectors and writers believed that these bayonets were German commercial products, that were hurriedly pressed into German service during WWI. Anthony Carter mentions in German Bayonets Volume II that Bavarian Records indicate they were manufactured in 1914-1915 specifically for German use.  Possibly used by Spain during the 1936-39 Civil War.

GERMAN WWII (Wehrmacht) BAYONETS

Excellent wood grips and finish on the handle.  There are no markings at all on the bayonet and scabbard except for a script 'o' on the bottom of the blade and a Wehrmacht eagle (with WaA 253) on the blade tang underneath the wood grips.  Excellent blade with no sharpening.  Metal scabbard with about 90% black paint remaining.  Rare.

Made by S/155G (Hörster) for manufacture in 1935 (matching).  Very nice wood grips with about 75% of blued finish on the handle.  Very nice blade with about 90% bluing on the blade with no sharpening.  Metal scabbard with about 50% bluing remaining.  Matching numbers on the bayonet and scabbard '3075 k'.

Police bayonet made by Paul Weyersberg & Co., Solingen with no date and no inspection markings.  Marked 'eagle B' for Police on top of muzzle ring, ricasso is marked 8808 and guard is marked '32692'.  Excellent bakelite grips with replaced screws/bolts with about 95% of blued finish on the handle.  Very nice blade with about 95% bluing on the blade with no sharpening.  Metal scabbard with about 80% blued finish remaining and made by Coppel, dated 1940 with serial number 6494d. Very scarce Police bayonet in excellent condition.  Possibly a post war refurbished bayonet (i.e. Yugoslavia).

German Modern Special Purpose Knives (No Reference) Rarity: R2
Spring assisted tactical rescue knife that was made by the Eickhorn factory in the 1990's for the Police, Firemen, Military and commemoratives such as ones for Harley Davidson.  Excellent aluminum metal handle with stainless steel blade.  Press button spring release automatically opens blade and unlocks blade to close in folding position (which also locks in place).  Marked Solingen on left side of blade.  Has belt attachment clip.  Typical high quality workmanship of the Eickhorn factory.  Overall length is 195mm with a blade length of 80mm.  This knife was personally purchased from the Eickhorn factory in the late 1990's.

Made by WKC.  Some bubbling of the late war zinc late war finish on the crossguard.  Very nice pumpkin celluloid grips.  Very nice blade with some light staining near the tip.  Late war zinc finish on the very nice pebbled scabbard.  Comes with high end hanger set marked D.R.G.M. with about 20% of the felt remaining on the back with some stitches starting to come out on the front with gold plated fittings.
